She is an actress/singer known as the "Scottish Songbird". Richard goes backstage to evangelize a bulletin to Grace from i of her friends. Richard is actually there to discuss the matter of Grace trying to bribery his male parent. Grace claims that his begetter and his uncle (who are twins) unjustly pinned a law-breaking they committed (embezzlement) on her father years ago, and that her father was sentenced to a penal colony for many years. Grace and her mother went from being important members of Inverness, Scotland lodge to outcasts, living mitt to oral cavity. Grace asks Richard to go with her to Inverness and hear her father's story and see for himself that her father is telling the truth. Richard believes his begetter and uncle are innocent, but he agrees to go with Grace, and they both prepare out for Inverness together. Along the way they both discover they were wrong most each other and find out some surprising truths about their relatives/families.

The hero Richard thought he was too large and clumsy and awkward, and not really handsome. He was surprised when Grace started to show an involvement in him since she was very beautiful and sought after by many men. At first Grace idea Richard was a bore and priggish, but thinking about piece of work and his ledgers. But he loosened up equally the story progressed. They were opposites attracting---the hero was large, the heroine very small and petite. The hero was reserved, the heroine was feisty. The hero was a virgin, the heroine had some experience with men.

I liked Grace. She was strong, assuming, and independent. She seemed more worldly than Richard, who was a bit naïve at times. I liked how she fought the bad guys when they were fighting Richard instead of just standing there like some heroines do. She was no shrinking violet. Richard was a sweet and caring hero.

This was an entertaining and lively read. I look forward to reading more books past this author.

Tick, tick, tick. All boxes checked. An easy read, with characters that captivated me from the showtime, the added bonus of delightful humour and most of import of all, that escapism gene. Did I forget, at least for a few hours, my troubles for the week? Absolutely!

She's a stage extra, non-virginal, though there'southward nothing trampy about her behaviour. She's a tough cookie who has learnt how to bargain with the cards life handed her and only wants her wrongfully jailed male parent's proper noun cleared since for her, information technology signalled the downward-turning betoken of her life. But this ways that H'south father and uncle take to admit their unsavoury part in that business.

He comes from a more flush breed of society, a gentleman whose intelligence and hard work as a lawyer/accountant is unparalleled and whose fierce (though undeserved) loyalty to family ways helping him protect their proficient proper noun. He sets himself the task of travelling with her to notice her father to prevent a slur on his family. He's such a stuffed shirt it's fun to scout her slowly help remove that proverbial stick upwardly his ass.

Their stubborn loyalty but shared integrity for the truth and rollercoaster events propel the volume along. Unfortunately the ending is a bit of an anti-climax. But I turned the pages with apprehension, got vested in the characters early on and vicious in love with them. I adored how both slowly break out of their cocky-built, protective, tough-shelled cocoons and learnt to trust and help each other.

I tin't yap about something I know cipher almost so I can't vouch if this romance is skillful on historical accuracies but I take a feeling if you need that type of solid assurance, you may want to look elsewhere. The author'south priority is fun, twists and drama at an splendid pace.

I have to mention their OTT showtime sexual practice scene together. I won't ruin information technology with details other than a brief fact which may be important for some readers. Don't click if you want to exist surprised (view spoiler)[ H is a virgin. (hide spoiler)]. Neither H nor h were conventional so I loved it when the authors kept them in character fifty-fifty during the passionate dear scenes.

My sugariness GR friend, the other Sandra, whom I like to call The Classy One, has written a far improve review with consummate details so do check it out. And thank you to Preeti and Vintage whose reviews of some other book by this writer reminded me of this former favourite.

Highly recommended for amusement value.

Flaky and shaky the writing perhaps, with enough of anachronistic behaviour and expressions only this book has that secret, special something.

For one, a almost odd couple but with an amazing and endearing chemistry minus the coyness and and then things keep happening and there's barely a let up.

An unapologetically non-virgin h and a 'chaste' H. A gutsy actress with no pretensions of talent apart for her sweet vocalism and a stodgy lawyer? An most 'beauty and the beast' match- she's a petite sparkling beauty who drives men mad at her very sight and he's an awkward giant who'd rather be alone with his ledgers than practise anything remotely adventurous. That sure hits all the correct notes.

And when they are on opposite and warring sides of a family feud/family secrets with the h hellbent on exposing his family and fifty-fifty blackmailing them, and he's sworn to protect his family unit, the sparks are certain to fly.
And and so they gear up on a fact finding mission/hazard with danger sniping at every stride. And likewise love!

However, she was no meek-and-mild miss. The claret of Highlanders pulsed through her veins...She was and then capable. She fabricated him feel like a damn eunuch.

And Grace fell deeper in love. She'd known many men in her life but this comport of a man with a lawyer'due south mind, an accountant'southward habits, and a knight'south spirit outshone them all.

A surprising gem. Loved it!

Since it's not off-white, considering I don't re-read all my books, I won't alter the rating but I tin can tell you I think it fits in the 5 star category.

I recollect Cathy Maxwell has given u.s. something new here. Sometimes I get tired of reading about Dukes and Earls and people who are poor but then find out they come from a rich family. Here we've got ii people of the lower class (well the hero isn't lower class merely he's someone who works for a living) and the heroine isn't a virgin- (view spoiler)[ the hero is! it fabricated so much sense cuz he kept staring at her chest but and then he wasn't lust-driven enough to become all up in her face similar so many 'rakes' and 'scoundrels' practise lol. (hide spoiler)]. I re-read this when I want to read about a non-virgin heroine with stuffy hero, just so I tin step away from the world of assurance and ballgowns stories.

I love that the heroine and hero even fit their names... 'Richard' is the perfect name for a stuffy attorney and Grace is the perfect proper noun for a beautiful singer. She'southward not a courtesan by whatsoever means only she's not a mistress.. she's had lovers but she'due south not loose and she doesn't spend her fourth dimension trying to seduce Richard or mess with his head. They are pretty honest with each other and I love that well-nigh them- no big misunderstandings until the small one at the end but even and so that felt understandable. He'southward not a behemothic teddy bear, he's a giant tough guy who wears his heart on his sleeve and he'southward merely looking for someone to love him.

Separately they might be lacking only together they become a power-couple and I can really see them having lots of babies while he works in his office and she sings them lullabies.

Get-go, I've read books with 'godly' characters before and ive been annoyed with every single one. While I don't have a trouble with faith I am non a very religious person because of the views that such stict reviews bring near and this book made methink of that peculiarly i relation to women. It wasn't only the graphic symbol (southward) with this perception but when its brought upwardly information technology ruins a seize with teeth of the enjoyment for me.
2d, While I institute Richard completely adroable and endearing there was a point where I just couldn't take it any more and wanted him to human up-- sooner. He acts too younng even with his inexperience it would've been better for him to motility forth faster than he did. As a result Grace seemed likethe over powering character and there was footling balance to the relationship.
In the finish in that location was some balance but becuase the book took and then long information technology didn't have time to even out completely or for Richard to seem up to par. Which I found a shame becuase th book was very enjoyable information technology just didn't seem to be well paced in character growth, mainly Richards.
However, Grace and Richard do make the perfect couple once the majority of the kincks are ironed out and there is some remainder to them every bit a couple. Her being immune weakness and him stepping in every bit her shield (even so a little flimsy it may exist). If he had simply maned up a little earlier on and perhaps a bit more there could've been more than balance making for improve grapheme growth and there fore a more well rounded story.
Their moments of residue were a big saving grace for this volume.Becuase during those moments the romance in their realtionship was very sugariness, romantic and touchhing. I espeically enjoyed the relatinship through Richard every bit he is a unlike sort of hero as he grows to meet Grace in anothe low-cal outside his need to entreatment to his father. Instead he grows from a very unsure man to i with more conviction and understanding of what will make him happy notwithstanding even so having that somewhat naievete to him (which was what bothered me most since in that location wasn't much growth outside of that).

Grace I found to exist very modern. Independent smart and clever. Willig to defy soceity to make her own manner her way despite what people may say or think. Yet, at the same time she's got a weakness to her from her troubled by that is hidden beneath the strength and wit she shields herself with.
I likewise enjoy the twins. Its been awhile since I 've come up across a volume with 'villians' that I despise so much while they are more conving and greedily evil while giving airs that they truly beileve they did zilch incorrect besides equally self righousness. Information technology makes for a great villian(s) and the're presented in a mode that just makes the reader cringe when it comes to them. That takes some skill. Even more then when they more than anything work behind the scenes and all the evil comes out through their cocky rightous behavior rather than any outward acts of evil that y'all meet in many other books.
Well worth the read despite the few annoyances I plant. I really enjoyd information technology none the less.

The Marriage Ring by Cathy Maxwell is a historical romance by a master of the genre. Who else would accept two character diametrically opposed to i another in every way? Simply Cathy Maxwell could make information technology work. Grace MacEachin has a bone to option with the Lynsted family unit. Grace wows audiences with her cute voice and voluptuous figure. When she'due south not on stage, she'south fighting off ardent suitors who want to make her their ain personal songbird. The real reason she is in London is to blackmail the stray Lynsted twins who let her father take the arraign for their misdeeds. She has a wee bit of muddy laundry they might not like public. Her only goal is justice.

Richard Lynsted is a behemothic of a man. Below his mammoth proportions beats the center of a romantic. Make that a romantic puritan. He keeps to himself while enriching his family with his financial acumen. Then one day, he overhears his begetter and uncle talking about being blackmailed by a Grace MacEachin. It is his duty to show himself to his father past confronting the evil blackmailer.

Grace and Richard are thrown together as she convinces him to meet her father to prove how he's been wronged past Richard'southward family. Richard agrees to go, unaware that his uncle and father have sent servants to accompany them whose sole purpose is to kill Grace.

Grace and Richard's attraction is a delight. Richard's naïve assumption that honesty wins in the end gets him in all sorts of situations. When Grace finally returns to Scotland to vindicate her father, she encounters a surprise. I never saw this coming. Bang-up job, Ms. Maxfield.

The Marriage Ring is some other romantic care for. It is best if yous have fourth dimension to read it in i setting. Romance and historical romance fans should both enjoy information technology.

For my own personal preferences, this book had two knocks against it. Starting time, the "hero is huge" trope, which is even more exasperating in this book equally Richard'due south head is described as nigh scraping the ceiling. Second, the "I've known yous for 4 days and now I'm securely in dear with y'all" trope. Barf. The terminal few capacity are absolutely ridiculous and no characters react to certain revelations the way real humans would. Overall, the unabridged book feels like information technology was written according to an outline, rather than letting the story develop naturally and believably. There are some funny and touching moments, but Grace and Richard deserved a improve story. ...more

I didn't love the part of their families in this, and since I do love my stories neatly wrapped up with everyone happy, this part was a flake disappointing.

But I will definitely read Ms. Maxwell in the future!

I had a harder time with this ane than the first three of Cathy's books I read, probably because I didn't like the characters as well. Grace, the heroine, is an actress who's gutsy but has suffered ill-treatment at the hands of men. It just took me a little more than time than I would have liked to warm to the characters. ...more

I love this series. Maxwell takes ii peripheral characters from the previous 2 books and gives them their own stories. Scottish Grace, and English Richard take both grown upward feeling unloved and unappreciated. They are thrown together and travel to Scotland, Grace to show her father innocent of a crime and Richard to testify his father innocent of the same criminal offence. The journey has many revelations, and they both find the truth and love. I may finish the side by side 2 books in the serial today.
